'Inubako' Bedside Boxes Used by Matsuura Clan of Hirado, Nagasaki Prefecture


     'Inubako' boxes were placed next to the pillow and used to store self-protection knives. They are often displayed with hina dolls as they are part of marriage furniture. The boxes in this picture were made in 1841 and actually used by a daughter of the Hirado lord.
