Japan Core Machinery Orders Up 2.1 Pct in October

Tokyo, Dec. 16 (Jiji Press)--Japan's seasonally adjusted core machinery orders went up 2.1 pct in October from the previous month to 869.8 billion yen, the Cabinet Office said Monday.
Core machinery orders, excluding orders for ships and power equipment, that are closely watched as a leading indicator for corporate capital investment, grew for the first time in four months.
The Cabinet Office kept its basic assessment unchanged, saying that the pickup in machinery orders is at a standstill.
Machinery orders from manufacturers rose 12.5 pct to 436.8 billion yen, the first increase in five months. Those from nonmanufacturers dipped 1.2 pct to 448.4 billion yen.
Overall machinery orders, including those from the public sector and abroad, surged 21.1 pct to 3,483.2 billion yen.
