Tokyo, April 10 (Jiji Press)--A Tokyo police initiative to invite children who have lost family members in accidents and criminal incidents to sports matches and other events marks its 10th anniversary this year.
Over 1,000 bereaved family members and others, including children, have taken part in the Metropolitan Police Department program so far. Participants say that both children and parents have been cheered up.
The MPD is asking corporations and other organizations to provide support to continue the initiative.
In October 2015, the MPD crime victim support office organized a visit by family members of crime victims to watch a soccer game of the Japan Professional Football League, or J.League. It was the first such event organized by Japanese police.
Since then, the office, with support from businesses, has invited such bereaved people to watch sports and music concerts 45 times, with a total of 1,014 people in 377 families participating.
