Japan Core Consumer Prices Up 2.7 Pct in FY 2024
Tokyo, April 18 (Jiji Press)--Japan's core consumer prices in fiscal 2024 rose 2.7 pct from the previous year, mainly reflecting rising prices of rice and other food items, internal affairs ministry data showed Friday.
The core consumer price index, excluding fresh food prices, stood at 108.7 on average in the fiscal year that ended last month, against the 2020 base of 100, rising for four consecutive years. The pace of growth slowed slightly from 2.8 pct in the previous year.
The index's climb outpaced the Bank of Japan's inflation target of 2 pct for three straight years. Price trends continue to support the BOJ's efforts to normalize monetary policy, although U.S. President Donald Trump's high tariff policy has increased uncertainty in the global economy.
Food prices jumped 5.0 pct. Rice prices surged 46.6 pct, the largest growth since 1971.
Vegetable and fruit prices also rose noticeably, with cabbage and mandarin orange prices leaping 62.5 pct and 26.0 pct, respectively. Prices went up for various food items, such as confectionery, drinks and prepared food, due to material price jumps and other reasons.
