Tokyo Consumer Prices Up 2.9 Pct in July
Tokyo, July 25 (Jiji Press)--The core consumer price index for Tokyo's densely populated 23 special wards rose 2.9 pct year on year in July, the Japanese internal affairs ministry said Friday.
The growth fell below 3 pct for the first time in four months, as energy prices turned lower.
The index, which excludes often-volatile fresh food prices, stood at 110.5 against the 2020 base of 100.
Energy prices went down 0.8 pct. Specifically, electricity and city gas rates decreased 0.5 pct and 1.5 pct, respectively, after they posted sharp increases a year earlier following the end of the Japanese government's subsidy program.
Water rates plunged 34.6 pct due to the Tokyo metropolitan government's program to waive basic fees during the summer.
