KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Tuesday appealed to warring parties in Gaza Strip to abide by their obligations to protect civilians and facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance amid the ongoing military operations there.

In his intervention during the 2nd Association of Southeast Asian Nations - Gulf Cooperation Council (Asean-GCC) Summit here, Marcos also expressed the Philippines’ great concern over Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza Strip.

“The Philippines is greatly concerned over Israel’s ongoing military operations across the Gaza Strip, which have resulted in the continued rise of the death of civilians, including women and children, and further exacerbating the dire humanitarian situation of the ground,” he said.

“The Philippines calls upon all parties to adhere to their obligations under international law, with particular emphasis on the protection of civilians, especially women and children, and the facilitation of humanitarian assistance to all those who are in need,” he added.

Marcos has repeatedly called for a ceasefire of hostilities in Gaza Strip since the conflict broke out in October 2023.

The Philippines also supported a United Nations resolution that urged the immediate declaration of a ceasefire between Israel and the Hamas group in December 2023.

In his remarks during the Asean-GCC Summit on Tuesday morning, Marcos commended the GCC — composed of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates — for their “increasing involvement and endeavors in peacemaking and in peace-building” amid global challenges to peace and security.

“These efforts have contributed to the enhancement of global security and stability through mediation, dialogue, and diplomacy, resulting in peace agreements, prisoner exchanges, and family reunifications,” the president said.

He also renewed the Philippines’ pitch for a non-permanent seat in the United Nations’ Security Council, citing the country’s experience in building peace and forging new paths of cooperation in Mindanao.

“We take this opportunity to reaffirm the Philippines' candidature to the United Nations Security Council for the term 2027-2028. We hope to count on your valuable support as we seek to bring our region's perspective to the United Nations Security Council,” Marcos added./mcm
