Ho Chi Minh City conducted a full-scale rehearsal of a record-breaking drone light show featuring 10,500 drones over the Saigon River on Monday evening, in preparation for the official performance on Thursday to mark the 50th anniversary of the liberation of southern Vietnam and Reunification Day (April 30).

The rehearsal was scheduled from 8:30 pm to 8:45 pm at Bach Dang Wharf in District 1.

As early as 6:30 pm, thousands had already gathered at Bach Dang Wharf and along Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street to secure good viewing spots.

Throughout the approximately 15-minute performance, drones illuminated the night sky with formations depicting key historical and contemporary symbols of Vietnam.

These included the iconic image of Tank No. 390 crashing through the gates of Independence Palace on April 30, 1975 - now known as Reunification Palace - a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh, the city’s first metro line, and the emblem commemorating the 50th anniversary of reunification.

Seamlessly blending advanced drone technology with artistic storytelling, the show offered spectators an unforgettable visual experience.

The official drone show is scheduled from 8:30 pm to 8:45 pm on Thursday as part of the ongoing 'Colors of the City' festival, promising to be a highlight of Ho Chi Minh City's commemorative events.

The organizers plan to submit documentation proposing recognition for a Vietnamese record for the highest number of drones flown simultaneously.

As of October 2024, the Guinness World Record for the most drones airborne at once was held by China, where 10,197 drones performed in a synchronized display.

The upcoming performance will span both banks of the Saigon River, covering areas in Thu Duc City - a district-level unit under Ho Chi Minh City - and District 1.

Spectators are advised to gather at Bach Dang Wharf and Thu Thiem Riverside Park for the best views.
