Ishiba Tops 2024 Income Rankings for Japan Party Leaders

Tokyo, June 30 (Jiji Press)--Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba was the top income earner among the leaders of eight Japanese political parties in 2024, logging 30.41 million yen, annual parliamentary reports showed Monday.
The income of Ishiba, president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, was pushed up by growth in miscellaneous income, including writing, speaking and television and radio appearance fees, and royalties, according to the reports on lawmakers' incomes for last year.
Ishiba's miscellaneous income shot up 15-fold to 6.29 million yen since his media exposure increased due to the LDP's leadership election and the general election for the House of Representatives, the lower chamber of parliament, both held in autumn last year.
His salaries for lawmaker and prime minister came to 24.11 million yen. Among the eight party leaders, only Ishiba reached 30 million yen in 2024 income.
Tetsuo Saito, chief of Komeito, the LDP's coalition partner, ranked second with 28.25 million yen in total 2024 income, followed by Yuichiro Tamaki, leader of the Democratic Party for the People, with 25.84 million yen and Seiji Maehara, co-head of Nippon Ishin no Kai (Japan Innovation Party), with 23.93 million yen.
