Lazaro meets with Asean secretary general for PH's 2026 chairship

MANILA, Philippines — Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro met with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Secretary General Kao Kim Hourn to tackle the Philippines’ preparations for its 2026 Asean chairship.
Lazaro disclosed the information in a tweet on Tuesday, detailing that they met in Kuala Lumpur.
“I met with Asean Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn in Kuala Lumpur on the sidelines of the 58th Asean Ministerial Meeting to discuss PH’s preparations for its 2026 Asean chairship,” said Lazaro.
“We count on the Asean Secretariat's support as we prepare for our upcoming chairship to advance a people-oriented, people-centered and rules-based Asean,” she added.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in September 2023, said the Philippines has accepted the role as chair and summit host of the Asean in 2026, as Myanmar, facing domestic problems, has opted to skip its turn.
“It is my pleasure to announce that the Philippines is ready to take the helm and chair [the] Asean in 2026,” Marcos told his fellow leaders during the 43rd Asean Summit. /das
