MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has described his ongoing state visit to India as “one of the most productive and constructive visits” he has ever had.

In a brief statement following his bilateral meeting with Indian President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday, Marcos said he looks forward to bringing home the gains from his engagements with Indian officials.

He also expressed appreciation for Murmu’s “very gracious and elegant” welcome for him and the rest of the Philippine delegation.

“I have to say that we did not expect to cover much ground because we had very little time that we have had here,” Marcos said.

“I am happy to be able to report that that was not certainly not the case, and this has been one of my most productive and constructive visits that I have ever had, and I attribute this to the enduring closeness between the Philippines and India, and in the time that we have had here, short as it was, we have discovered a multitude of possibilities and areas of potential,” Marcos said.

Marcos is on a five-day state visit to India, which began on August 4 and will end on August 8.

Following a separate bilateral meeting also held on Tuesday with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Marcos officially announced the Philippines’ strategic partnership with India, marking it as the country’s fifth official strategic ally.

Other strategic partners of the Philippines are Japan, Australia, South Korea, and Vietnam.

Marcos and Modi also signed 13 bilateral agreements in the areas of defense, science and technology, and other sectors.
