MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Agriculture (DA) will retain the P43 maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) per kilo of imported rice during the 60-day ban on overseas procurement of this household staple.

“We will maintain the MSRP even during the two-month rice import ban,” said Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. in a statement on Thursday.

“Throughout the suspension, we will closely monitor supply and market dynamics—especially among retailers, wholesalers and importers—and take appropriate action to uphold market discipline,” he added.

President Marcos earlier announced the enforcement of the two-month rice import ban to stabilize local prices of palay (unmilled rice) and protect farmers from the cheap imported rice.

Under Executive Order No. 62 signed in June last year, all imported rice entering the country is slapped with a 15-percent import tax until 2028, subject to a review every four months. /dda
